Down in the Dirt

With B and L Sewer

When people think of branding photography, they picture high-end boutiques, sleek corporate offices, or perfectly curated product shots. But every business is beautiful — even the messy, smelly, gritty ones.

I  photographed a local sewer company recently and it allowed me to capture a family-run business at work. It was a reminder that branding photography isn’t just about creating polished images; it’s about telling a story. And in this case, honouring hard work.

One of my favourite parts of this session was capturing the dynamic between a father and son working side by side. These images don’t just represent a business; they tell a story of family and a commitment to the trades.

If you know me well, you probably know that my dad was a carpenter. I've grown up on construction sites my whole life. And while my friends watched cartoons on Saturday morning, I watched This Old House with Bob Villa instead. When I went to college in Halifax, Nova Scotia, my dad packed me a tool kit and an extra set of his drills. I even worked for his company for a few years putting all my skills to work.

Over the days I spend shooting this sewer company I caught myself thinking about how much I value the very few photos I have of my own dad at work. Because truth is our work matters and how you spend your 9-5 is worth capturing, especially if it's your own business.

Whether you’re a builder covered in sawdust, a mechanic elbow deep in engine grease, or a landscaper covered in sap, action shots will bring your businesses to life. No matter the industry, people connect with people, and customers want to know who they’re hiring. They want to see the real people behind the work.

So if you're a small business owner looking to showcase your brand with authentic, storytelling-driven photography, let's work together.
